What is nonprofit capacity building?
Capacity building is the process of strengthening a nonprofit’s operational foundation (governance, systems, data, and processes) so the organization can pursue funding with confidence and report results that matter. It typically covers four areas: organizational assessment, board development, operating systems, and data infrastructure. Capacity-building engagements are often funded through capacity-building grants from foundations or county agencies.
How is capacity building different from strategic planning?
Strategic planning sets direction: the 3 to 5 priorities your organization is pursuing. Capacity building makes that direction executable: the people, systems, and data infrastructure that carry the work. Most clients need both.
How long does a capacity-building engagement take?
Engagements typically run 3 to 12 months depending on scope. A focused board development engagement may be 8 to 12 weeks. A full capacity-building grant deliverable spanning all four pillars is usually 6 to 12 months.
What does a capacity-building engagement cost?
Engagements are scoped to your organization’s stage, the depth of work, and which of the four pillars are in scope. We provide a clear proposal with the number during your discovery call, before you commit. Most capacity-building work is funded through capacity-building grants from foundations or county agencies.
